John McPherson is the Director of SED&RQ Pty Ltd and also the principal technologist.  He has 30 years of experience working for ExxonMobil in exploration, production and research divisions, studying world-class reservoirs on six continents.  He also has 10 years of academic research and teaching experience, with two books and over 60 papers published in major scientific journals.  He holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, NZ and is a member of AAPG, the Society for Sedimentary Geology, the Int Association of Sedimentologists and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia.

"My approach to reservoir characterisation is multidisciplinary and starts with conventional cores.  From the detailed sedimentologic descriptions of the core it is possible to categorise the reservoir in terms of lithofacies or reservoir facies.  These can then be related to depositional facies and the depositional setting in order to understand the larger-scale architectural features of the reservoir.  The smaller scale aspects of reservoir quality require detailed petrographic studies, and these can be tied to the measured properties of porosity, permeability and hydrocarbon saturation.  When linked to lithofacies, they provide the primary feed data for geologic modelling"
